This course deals with English pragmatics. In pragmatics, we look at “how to do things with words” in a language. Topics will cover areas such as implicatures, deixis, presuppositions, speech acts, and information structure. In addition to the theoretical analysis of these concepts and theories, students will conduct their own pragmatic research study, present results to the instructor and write everything up as a research report.
