This course deals with English pragmatics. In pragmatics, we look at “how to do things with words” in a language. Topics will cover areas such as implicatures, deixis, presuppositions, speech acts, and information structure. In addition to the theoretical analysis of these concepts and theories, students will conduct their own pragmatic research, present results in class and write it up as a term paper.
