Module 3: Empirical-qualitative methods (Erwin Gierlinger)
This module introduces students into the main aspects of empirical-qualitative research in teaching English as a foreign language (TEFL). It postulates that qualitative research offers a practical avenue to real-classroom problems. In particular, this module enables students to become familiarised with a number of qualitative research instruments and techniques in a TEFL environment such as:
• MAXQDA
• SILL – the strategy inventory for language learning
• Vocabulary and ESP (English for specific purposes) research tools (e.g. V-words and V-lists, etc.)
• Learner diaries
• Stimulated recall
• Think-aloud protocols
• Conversation analysis techniques
This module emphasises studying phenomena in their natural settings, attempting to make sense of or interpreting things in terms of the meanings people bring to them.
