The aim of this course is to introduce you to four core-areas of English linguistics. In around 30 contact hours you will start investigating phenomena relating to pronunciation, vocabulary, sentence-structure and the meaning of words and phrases in English. By the end of this lecture you will have an overview over the main ideas, problems, research history and terminology of those four core-areas of linguistics. The final exam will cover all four areas and consist of multiple-choice-questions, brief definitions, the analysis of linguistic structures as well as phonetic transcriptions. In this Moodle course you can find additional material from the coursebook as well as all the powerpoint slides from the lecture.
